Patient Advocacy

Background: Since my hemicolectomy in April 2019, which is also when I was first declared as “free of disease” or “dancing with NED” (no evidence of disease), I have been looking for ways to honor my survivorship. And these are some of the ways I have found so far:

Cancer Research Institute (CRI)

  • I shared my story with CRI and we did a virtual video interview as well: check it out HERE!
  • I am a member of their ImmunoAdvocate Forum meeting quarterly to discuss ways to support and empower other cancer patients (as well as each other) who have gone through immunotherapy treatment and clinical trials.
  • I was a panelist in their Conversation about Cancer Care Disparities discussion at their annual Patient Summit Series, Oct 2021. You can watch it HERE!
  • Here is one of the clips from our video interviews: Storytelling to Break Down Barriers in Cancer Care: Michaela’s Immunotherapy Story

American Indian Cancer Foundation (AICAF)

Association of Community Cancer Centers (ACCC)

  • I shared my story for the ACCC’s Community Oncology Research Institute’s (ACORI) CALL TO ACTION Summit (LIVE) to set the tone for the 2-day virtual event (Sept 13-14, 2021) that explored practical solutions to strengthen and diversify oncology clinical trials in communities across the country.
